At, as you will have no doubt realised, ‘By The Author’ we are evangelical about the importance of having your own website.

But where do you start? If you don’t currently have a website (or at least an effective website) then read on as we have compiled a few top starting points to help you get your website up and running.

One: start backwards

This may seem a little bit counterproductive but you need to start by envisaging the end result of your work – how it works for your readers, your customers, and how it can help you sell more books and raise your profile. It is easy to get caught up in the design of your site and lose sight of how user friendly it will be when it is all finished.

Two: money

Remember that your website is only part of your internet marketing strategy but a very important part. How much money do you have to invest and how do you ensure you are spending it wisely?

At the very least you will need the following so do some research into how much these will cost you.

• A domain name (URL)
• A website
• Either you maintain and update the site or you’ll have to pay someone else to do it
• Email addresses
• Hosting (where your website will sit on a server so that it can be accessed on the internet)

Free is not always the best however tempting it may seem at first. Consider that you may end up with a strange website address www.freewebsite.comyourname instead of your own, personalised domain. If that isn’t a huge problem for you then take a second to think the impression that gives to your visitors. When looking at free sites also think about how limited storage and limited options for design and format will affect you later down the line.

Three: maintenance

You need to think seriously about how much of this will you do yourself, how much do you want to do, how much can you do, and how much time do you have? Where do you skills lie – are you as happy writing your own copy as you are updating the site using a content? This will help you decide whether you go it alone or hire in a company to do all or part of your site.
